Green Wash
This term was coined a while ago. James Martin in his recent book "The Meaning of the 21st Century" did a section on it. I like his explaination, so I quote it here.
"The world's multinational energy companies feel the need to tell the public how much they care about the environment. One of them invited me to visit its corporate headquaters in the Southern Hemisphere, which was hearalded as a green building. The building used only a few solar panels (its architect explained that it was cheaper to buy electricity from the electricity company), and it caught almost no rainwater. Both electricity and water in that region were artifically cheap, thanks to government subsidies. The profitable business decision was not to be ecologically correct. This is referred to as 'green wash' ".
